Babysitting is an enormous responsibility, but these basic guidelines go a long way to ensuring child safety. Be sure your sitter knows these guidelines, and that any home with children becomes familiar with these guidelines for handy reference. |
Always supervise infants and children.
Make sure toys don't have small parts which could be swallowed.
Make sure small items, such as golf tees and marbles, are not left within the reach of infants and small children.
Never leave plastic bags or dry cleaner wrapping of any kind near infants or small children.
Always supervise children in or near water, even when separated by fences or protective devices.
Never leave children unattended near any amount of water, even for the briefest amount of time.
Ensure fences are installed around pools.
Keep poisons and medicines away from children's reach.The telephone number for the Poison Control Center is (800) 876-4766.
Make sure children are strapped in their car seats or high chairs.
When shopping with children in shopping carts, make sure they are strapped in and are never permitted to stand up in the cart.
Post family members work, home, and cellular telephone numbers for emergency contact.
Keep all guns and ammunition, sharp knives and hazardous objects away from all children.

- Make sure your home can be quickly identified from the street by ensuring that the correct address is clearly marked and visible. We suggest the home address numbers be located near the street, clearly visible from either direction, and near the front door. Cul-de-sac addresses should point in the direction of the street

- For businesses, the address should be visible from across the street and above the main door entrance or corner of the building in industrial areas. Cul-de-sac addresses should point in the direction of the street
